If you only see the top window border of SVAR when running the software on Windows XP (compiled, stand-alone and MatLab version), there are several ways to solve this issue. The simplest solution has been suggested by Dagfinn Rime and is as follows for the compiled version:
Solution: In the directory where SVAR was installed, right-click on the file var.exe. From the options on the Context menu select "Properties". On the Properties dialog, select the "Compatibility" tab. On this tab there's a frame called "Display settings". Make sure that "Disable visual themes" is check marked. Then click on the Apply and OK button to make this setting permanent for var.exe. See Figure below.

For the stand-alone source and Matlab versions, this issue only occurs when you're using an older version of Matlab. In that case you can either impose the above setting on matlab.exe or upgrade to a version of Matlab that supports Windows XP.
