The axes properties dialog is a tabbed dialog with tabs called X Axes, Y Axis and, for 3D plots, Z Axis. At the top of the dialog you'll find a title editing control from which you can change the title of an axes object. Below the tabs you'll see a select graph control, from which you can switch among axes objects in a multi-axes figure.

On the individual tabs you can change the label, axis limits, tick step spacing, and scale properties. In addition, you can determine if grid lines should be displayed for the axis. For example, on the X Axis tab the grid lines in question are the vertical lines crossing/perpendicular to the X axis.
